Nigeria's rising sprint queen, Chioma Nwachukwu, delivered a moment of pure brilliance on Day 3 of the ongoing CAA U18/U20 African Athletics Championships, storming to victory in the 400m U18 women final with a dazzling time of 52.47 seconds.
In front of a rapturous home crowd at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Nwachukwu ran with precision and poise, dominating the race from start to finish. Her performance not only earned her the gold medal but also ignited a fresh wave of excitement around Nigeria’s athletic future.
"I zeroed my mind to get gold in this tournament," she said moments after her gold medal presentation. "In 2023, I won the trial but couldn’t participate because of my age. I’ve been waiting for this chance, and I gave it my all."she proudly submitted.
Her story is one of purpose, perseverance, and passion. After being sidelined last year due to age ineligibility, Chioma returned to the track with fire in her heart and a clear mission in mind — to bring glory to Nigeria and prove her worth on the continental stage.
Now crowned African champion in her category, the 16-year-old prodigy is already looking ahead. "I will keep doing my personal best to qualify for future tournaments," she vowed, her eyes set firmly on global podiums.
Her victory adds yet another feather to Team Nigeria’s increasingly decorated cap at the championships, further boosting the nation’s chances of finishing atop the overall medal table. More importantly, it cements Chioma Nwachukwu’s status as a star to watch — one who runs not just with her legs, but with the weight of a nation’s hopes on her shoulders.
As the championship unfolds, Nigeria celebrates not just a medal, but the emergence of a legend in the making.
