NEWS UPDATE:AUGA IN 12 YEARS DARKNESS: RESIDENTS CRY FOR HELP.
Auga, an ancient town in Akoko, Ondo State, has been plunged into total darkness for the past 12 years, leaving residents in distress and businesses in ruins. Once a vibrant town that enjoyed a steady power supply, Auga’s fortunes changed when a transmission line sparked, cutting off electricity completely. Despite being surrounded by communities with stable power, Auga remains the only town in the area suffering from prolonged darkness.
Hon. Engr. Steve Giwa, a respected son of the soil and former Chairman of the Ondo State Water Corporation during the Mimiko administration, has stepped forward to appeal on behalf of his people. He is calling on the present government of Ondo State, led by His Excellency, Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, to rescue the community from this hardship and restore electricity.
According to Hon. Giwa, Aoga’s neighboring towns, including Ise, Akunu Akoko, and even the small settlement of Ase Akoko, all enjoy constant power supply, making Auga’s condition even more disheartening. “We are surrounded by light, yet we remain in darkness. This has crippled businesses, affected livelihoods, and made life unbearable for our people,”Giwa lamented.
The community, despite its resilience, lacks the financial and technical capacity to restore electricity on its own. Attempts to seek help from relevant authorities in the past have yielded no positive results. Many residents have abandoned their businesses, and those who remain struggle daily with the high cost of alternative power sources.
Hon. Giwa also pointed out that while other towns around Auga have been provided with solar-powered streetlights, Auga has been completely neglected. “It is painful that while other communities enjoy solar lights, our town is left in absolute darkness. Even a simple effort like providing solar streetlights would have made a difference,” he said.
Auga is known for being a welcoming town that accommodates strangers and fosters economic activities. However, with the absence of electricity, business operations have been paralyzed, security has weakened, and the overall quality of life has deteriorated. The once-bustling town now struggles to survive in an era where electricity is essential for daily living.
Hon. Giwa passionately called on Governor Aiyedatiwa to intervene urgently. “Our people are suffering. We are not asking for much—just the restoration of our electricity. The governor is known for his commitment to development, and we trust that he will not let Aoga remain in darkness,” he pleaded.
The people of Auga remain hopeful that their cries will be heard. They believe that with the government’s intervention, their community can once again experience growth, stability, and a return to normal life. The question remains: how much longer must Auga wait before the lights come back on?
As the appeal gains momentum, all eyes are on the Ondo State government to respond swiftly and end Auga’s 12-year ordeal. The residents remain hopeful that soon, they too will enjoy the basic right of electricity, just like their neighboring communities.
