CHIEF ADA ADARANIWA DECRIES THE RISING SPATE OF GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE IN OUR SOCIETY.
Media in Nigeria is replete with stories of gender-based violence at home or in the streets many of them with gory endings. It is on this premise that Chief (Hon) Mrs Ada Adaraniwa Marshal Apata, a prominent advocate for women's rights and National Coordinator for Vulnerable Women Vanguard of Nigeria has spoken out against the alarming rise of gender-based violence in our society. In a meeting she held with the highest echelon of the group in Akure today, she expressed her deep concern and called for urgent action to address this pressing issue.
Chief Akpata, who is also the convener of Women Youth in Politics, known for her tireless efforts in championing gender equality, emphasized the need for a collective effort to combat gender-based violence. According to Chief Apata, the Yeye Iyaniwura Oodua Agbaye, "Gender-based violence encompasses various forms, including domestic violence, sexual assault, harassment, and harmful cultural practices which are rampant in our society today". Chief Apata stressed that it is crucial to recognize that these acts are not isolated incidents but a systemic problems deeply rooted in societal norms and attitudes.
In her recommendations, Chief Apata urged the government, civil society organizations, and individuals to work together to create a comprehensive framework that addresses gender-based violence effectively. She emphasized the importance of implementing stricter laws, providing support services for survivors, and promoting education and awareness campaigns to challenge harmful gender stereotypes." we call on the federal government of Nigeria to create more institutions and strengthen the existing ones that can address the root causes of gender-based violence." she also called for the continuous review of the existing policies and laws on gender-based violence to accommodate best practices of GBV strategies in nipping the score on the bud.
